Published: February 23, 2026

Choosing the right skip size saves money and hassle. Too small and you'll need a second skip. Too large and you're paying for space you don't need.

We offer four main skip sizes at BSM Group: 2-ton, 4-ton, 8-ton, and roll-on roll-off (RoRo) skips. Each serves different project types and waste volumes.

Here's what you need to know about skip hire in Liverpool.

2-Ton Skip

The 2-ton skip is our smallest option. It holds roughly 20-25 bin bags of waste.

Best for:

  • Garden clearances
  • Small bathroom renovations
  • Kitchen cupboard clear-outs
  • Garage tidy-ups
  • DIY projects with minimal waste

This skip works well for homeowners doing weekend projects. It fits on most driveways and doesn't take up much space.

The 2-ton skip handles general household waste, garden waste, and light building materials. Not suitable for heavy materials like concrete, soil, or rubble in large quantities.

4-Ton Skip

The 4-ton skip holds approximately 35-40 bin bags. It's one of our most popular sizes for domestic projects.

Best for:

  • Full bathroom refurbishments
  • Kitchen renovations
  • Flooring replacement projects
  • Extensive garden landscaping
  • Loft conversions
  • Small extension work

This size gives you enough capacity without overwhelming your property. Most driveways can accommodate a 4-ton skip comfortably.

The 4-ton skip handles heavier materials better than the 2-ton option. You can dispose of tiles, plasterboard, timber, and moderate amounts of brick or concrete.

8-Ton Skip

The 8-ton skip, sometimes called an 8 tonne skip, holds 60-80 bin bags of waste. It's the go-to choice for larger construction projects.

Best for:

  • House renovations involving multiple rooms
  • Garage or shed demolitions
  • Large-scale landscaping projects
  • Construction site waste
  • Commercial refurbishments
  • Clearance of entire properties

The 8-ton skip handles significant volumes of heavy waste. Bricks, concrete, soil, metal, and timber all fit within its capacity.

You need adequate space for delivery and collection. The skip lorry requires clear access of at least 3 meters width. Check your driveway or proposed location can accommodate both the skip and the vehicle.

Roll-On Roll-Off (RoRo) Skips

RoRo skips are the largest option we provide. These range from 20 to 40 cubic yards.

Best for:

  • Major commercial construction projects
  • Industrial waste disposal
  • Large demolition work
  • Factory or warehouse clearances
  • Significant site clearances
  • Projects generating very high waste volumes

RoRo skips get delivered by specialized vehicles. They're open-top containers that roll off the back of the lorry. Collection works the same way in reverse.

These skips need substantial space. You'll typically see them on large construction sites or commercial premises. Not practical for most domestic driveways.

RoRo skips handle mixed waste streams efficiently. The large capacity means fewer collections and lower overall costs for major projects.

How to Choose the Right Skip Size

Start by estimating your waste volume. Most people underestimate how much waste their project generates.

Single room renovation: 4-ton skip usually covers it.

Multiple rooms or whole floor: 8-ton skip gives you breathing room.

Full house renovation or demolition: RoRo skip prevents multiple collections.

Garden project: 2-ton or 4-ton depending on scale.

Consider the waste type. Heavy materials like soil, concrete, and bricks take up skip capacity faster. A 4-ton skip filled with bricks weighs more than one filled with timber and plasterboard.

Factor in delivery access. Measure your driveway width and check for overhead cables or tree branches. The delivery vehicle needs clear access to drop and collect the skip.

Skip Permits in Liverpool

You don't need a permit if the skip sits on private property. Your driveway, front garden, or private car park all count as private land.

You need a permit from Liverpool City Council if the skip goes on a public highway. This includes roads, pavements, and grass verges outside your property.

The permit costs vary. Budget for approximately £30-£50 for a standard permit lasting 14 days. We can arrange permits on your behalf for skip hire in Liverpool.

Some roads prohibit skips entirely. Main roads and certain residential streets have restrictions. Check with the council before booking.

Place skips on private land where possible. It's cheaper, simpler, and you avoid permit complications.

Skip Filling Guidelines

Don't overfill your skip. Waste should sit level with the top. Anything sticking out creates safety hazards and prevents collection.

Overloaded skips breach road safety regulations. We can't collect skips that exceed the fill line. You'll need to remove excess waste before collection.

Distribute heavy materials evenly across the skip base. This prevents instability during transport.

Break down large items where possible. Dismantled furniture and flat-packed materials use space more efficiently than whole items.

Avoid prohibited materials:

  • Asbestos
  • Batteries
  • Electrical appliances (in some cases)
  • Paint tins
  • Gas bottles
  • Tyres
  • Clinical waste

Contact us if you're unsure whether specific materials are acceptable.

Alternative Options

Sometimes a skip isn't the best solution. We also offer grab hire services in Liverpool for certain projects.

Grab hire works well for:

  • Heavy materials like soil, hardcore, and rubble
  • Projects with difficult access
  • Situations where you can't place a skip
  • Large volumes of similar waste types

The grab lorry parks on the road and extends a hydraulic arm to collect waste. It reaches over walls, fences, and obstacles that would block skip delivery.

Grab hire typically costs less for heavy materials. You pay by weight rather than skip volume.

Booking Your Skip

Booking skip hire with BSM Group is straightforward. We need a few details:

  • Skip size required
  • Delivery address
  • Preferred delivery date
  • Hire duration needed

Getting the Right Fit

The right skip size makes your project run smoother. A 2-ton skip handles small clearances. A 4-ton skip covers most home renovations. An 8 tonne skip tackles major building work. RoRo skips manage commercial-scale projects.

Measure your waste volume honestly. Add 20% to your estimate as a buffer. Consider waste weight and density alongside volume.

Check delivery access before booking. Confirm whether you need permits for public highway placement.
